The best way to visit Iceland is by car. Although there are plenty of busses and tours driving along the most popular destinations in the land of ice and fire, having your own car will help you to visit the less popular spots in Iceland as well. In this post, we’ll take you on a road trip for 2 weeks in Iceland. We’ll give you all the information you need to prepare for your road trip of a lifetime. Although you’ll spend a couple of hours a day driving , we promise you’ll never have a dull moment. There aren’t many countries in the world that can beat the Icelandic landscapes!
Note that this itinerary is suitable for the summer months when the day hours seem endless. You’ll be able to start early in the morning and continue driving until late in the evening, allowing you to see many things in just one day.

What car do you need to drive in Iceland?
In Iceland, you have different types of roads: paved roads, gravel roads and the famous F-roads. The paved roads and most gravel roads are perfectly doable with a 2WD car. On the F-roads, 2WD drives are forbidden. If you want to add F-roads to your itinerary, you will need a 4WD. Note that the entire island has epic landscapes and things to see. If it is the first time you visit Iceland, a 2WD should be sufficient. If you’re a frequent visitor, a 4WD can be a good option to visit some more remote parts of the country. The itinerary we suggest can easily be done driving a 2WD car.

To save some money on accommodation, camping in Iceland is the best option. However, as the weather can be harsh at certain moments, we recommend hiring a campervan for your trip through Iceland! If you enjoy the luxury of guesthouses and hotels a passenger car is the way to go.

Day 1 – Arrival in Iceland and the Reykjanes peninsula including the Blue Lagoon

Description of the route
Because Iceland is an island, you’ll probably arrive by plane at Keflavik International Airport. The airport is situated approximately 50 kilometers from the center of Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. The first thing to do is pick-up your rental car. Most rental companies are situated around the airport and most of them offer pick-up services.
After picking-up your car, we suggest to drive South towards the Reykjanes peninsula. Driving here will give you a first taste of the landscapes Iceland will offer you during your visit. We promise you it will be mind-blowing! The entire peninsula is covered in lava with hardly any vegetation on it. It will feel like the airplane dropped you on the moon.
On the Reykjanes peninsula, there are some really cool places to visit. A first one is the bridge between continents. This bridge connects the North American and the Eurasian continental plates. A cool thing to see, as nowhere else on earth continental plates are so close to each other. Another place that is worth a stop is the Gunnuhver Hot Springs. A first encounter with the geothermal activity on the island: boiling mud pools, steaming water and the smell of rotten eggs!
If you want to pay a visit to the top attraction of Iceland, the Blue Lagoon, take a left turn in Grindavik and drive towards the Blue Lagoon. No better way to wash off the flight hours by soaking in warm, milky-blue water!
If you’re in for something else, we highly recommend the Fagradalsfjall volcano. As this volcano was recently active, you’re able to see the huge stream of lava coming down the volcano. The landscapes are again breathtaking and give you the feeling you’re on another planet.
Where to stay in the Reykjanes peninsula and Grindavik
Northern Light Inn
This luxury hotel is only 1 kilometer away from the Blue Lagoon. It offers a wellness spa, fitness center and a fireplace with magnificent views over the lava landscape of the Reykjanes peninsula. As can be expected, there is free WiFi and a superb breakfast is included.
Anita´s Guest House
This guest house offers basic and affordable bedrooms with a shared bathroom. There is a communal kitchen if you want to cook yourself.

Day 2 – The Golden Circle

Description
Day two of this itinerary will take you along the main attractions of the famous Golden Circle in Iceland. The first stop is the Kerid Crater. This crater is an explosion crater that originated 3000 years ago. It’s definitely worth to take a walk around the crater and admire the greenish water inside it.
If you continue driving on road 35, you will reach Geysir Geothermal Area. Here you have the famous Geysir geyser, currently inactive. But there is also an active geyser, Strokkur, that blows every five to ten minutes hot water in the air. There are also smaller geysers, boiling mud pools and other geothermal attractions in this area.
Tip – if you have a smartphone with you, it’s fun to film the eruption of the geyser in slow motion. That way, you clearly see the formation of a pretty blue waterbell before it explodes.
If you continue driving on road 35, you arrive at the majestic Gullfoss waterfall, one of the most powerful waterfalls in Iceland. After visiting Gullfoss, we suggest you return back to the Ring Road (road 1) using road 30. Driving that road, you’ll be able to visit one of the most beautiful hot springs in Iceland, Hrunalaug. You have to pay entrance, but it’s definitely worth it. Note that it can get crowded, so it’s best to arrive early in the morning or late in the evening.
If you still have some time left, make a detour when heading back to the Ring Road. Instead of continuing on road 30, we suggest to make a loop via roads 325 and 26.

Loa’s Nest
This guesthouse in Hella offers rooms with a private bathroom, some units even have a patio. There is a huge parking lot and a kitchen at your disposal.
Hotel Rangá
This luxury hotel is situated on a more remote location in Hella, next to the river. The rooms have nice views over the mountains or the river. Some of the rooms have a spa bath and/or a balcony. There is also a restaurant that offers local food.
Kanslarinn Hostel
This hotel offers affordable rooms, some with a private and others with a shared bathroom. It is situated in the center of Hella. A nice breakfast is included when staying in this hotel. The hotel also offers a great restaurant.
Day 3 – Waterfalls and black sand beaches

Day 3 of this 2 weeks in Iceland itinerary is probably one of our favorite days! This day is filled with so many natural wonders! It starts with two of our favorite waterfalls: Seljalandsfoss and Gljufurarfoss. Seljalandsfoss is a majestic 65 meters tall waterfall and it’s best known as the waterfall where you can walk behind. Definitely a must-do. Be sure to put on some rainwear, because you’ll definitely get wet! Next to Seljalandsfoss, hidden in a lava tunnel you can find Gljufrabui, our favourite waterfall on the entire island. Standing next to this waterfall makes you think you are the main character of a fairytale.
Another impressive waterfall is Skogafoss, 60 meters tall and 25 meters wide. It’s also fun to make the short hike up to the waterfall.
Iceland is not only famous for its waterfalls, but its black sand beaches attract many visitors as well. The most famous one is black sand beach Reynisfjara. But it’s not only the black sand that makes this beach famous. A couple of meters into the ocean you have Reynisdrangar: some stunning rock formations rising from the water. Especially during a cloudy day, this place is the location to make some moody photographs. Don’t forget to have a look at the basalt columns and the caves. The basalt columns are formed by liquid lava that cools down quickly. Impressive!
If you are visiting Iceland during the summer months, the region of black sand beach Reynisfjara is an excellent place to spot puffins. We saw many of these cute little birds at Dyrhólaey.
Where to stay in Vik and the region of black sand beach
The best place to stay after visiting the black sand beach is Vík. Below you can find some places to stay, ranging from affordable to more expensive.
The Barn
This affordable hostel, just outside Vík, offer double rooms, with a private bathroom or a shared bathroom. They also have dorms with beds that have blackout drapes. This place is excellent if you want to cook for yourself as they have a communal kitchen at your disposal. There is WiFi in all areas and the WiFi is free of charge.
Puffin Hostel Vík
This affordable hostel is located in the center of Vík and only a 10 minutes walk from Vík’s black sand beach. They have a communal kitchen and free WiFi. All rooms have shared bathrooms. A breakfast is offered at an additional rate of € 14 per person.
Grand Guesthouse Gardakot
Iceland is famous for its many sheep, so why not staying on a sheep farm while you’re visiting Iceland? Grand House Gardakot is a family-run guesthouse, set on a sheep farm a couple of kilometers from Vík. Some rooms have private bathrooms while others have shared facilities. A delicious breakfast is included.
Black Beach Suites
In for some luxury once in a while? Black Beach Suites offer suites with sun terraces and views over the ocean. These apartments offer a private bathroom, a comfy double bed and a kitchen.
Day 4 – Lagoons, glaciers and diamonds

Description
Just like day 3, day 4 is filled with many spectacular things to see! Continue from Vík on the Ring Road. On your way you’ll drive through Eldhraun, an impressive lava field that is entirely covered with moss. The lava formations are spectacular to see. There is one stop along the road where they created a walking path. Please make sure to stay on the path, otherwise, it takes several years for the moss to recover.
After Eldhraun, the next stop is the breathtaking canyon Fjaðrárgljúfur. The canyon is two kilometers long and the surrounding rocks are 100 meters tall. There is a hiking trail that takes you to the end of the canyon where you’ll see a couple of waterfalls. This canyon just can’t be described in words.
Tip – Before you start the hike make sure to take a picture on the bridge. The view from here into the canyon is probably one of the best photos of your entire trip in Iceland.
If you’re up for some hiking, we highly suggest to make a stop at Skaftafell. In the visitor center, they give you more information about the different hikes in the area. We choose to hike to Svartifoss, which means black waterfall. The waterfall is 20 meters tall and is surrounded by black basalt columns, hence its name. It’s a relatively easy hike that takes about one hour. After you return to the visitor center, do pay a visit to Skaftafellsjökull, a glacier tongue from the largest glacier in Iceland, Vatnajökull.
Speaking of the Vatnajökull glacier, the next stops entirely relate to this glacier. Continue driving east on the Ring Road until you reach Fjallsárlon. Fjallsárlon is a glacier lake with icebergs floating in it. The lake is smaller than the lake you’ll see in the next stop, but what makes it special is that you have a good view over the glacier. From the parking lot you can start a short hike in one direction and return in the opposite direction. We still remember the moment we reached the lake and were in awe by the beauty of this place.
The next stop is probably one of the most popular spots in Iceland: Diamond beach. This black sand beach is spectacular because of the many icebergs that wash up ashore. The combination of the ice and the black sand is just amazing. Don’t forget to cross the street to have a look at Jökulsárlón. Although this glacier lake is the result of climate change, it’s a stunning place. It’s full with giant icebergs in the most beautiful icy blue you’ve ever seen. Look out for seals, as they are often resting on one of the icebergs.
Tip – It’s possible to take a boat tour that takes you to the glacier, which we highly recommend. They’ll take you to the glacier, the icebergs and the seals. During the boat trip, you also get some explanation about the glacier, the lake and the ice.
Where to stay to visit diamond beach, the lavafields and Svartifoss
Skyrhusid
This farm guesthouse is only 10 minutes away from Jökulsárlón and Diamond beach. It offers basic rooms with wonderful views over the mountains and wooden floors. The bathroom facilities are shared. There are two restaurants on the site, but there is also a small kitchen if you like to cook yourself.
Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon
This hotel offers luxury accommodation, only 30 kilometers away from Jökulsárlón and diamond beach. All rooms have a private bathroom, some rooms have panoramic windows, bathrooms with bath tub and walk-in showers.
Lækjarhus Farm Holidays
Here you can stay on a farm with the animals running freely in the yard. The farm is situated 26 kilometers from Jökulsárlón and diamond beach. The bathroom facilities are shared and there is a shared kitchen available.
Day 5 – At the end of the world in Stoksness

Description
The start of day 5 starts with a drive direction Höfn. If you’re in for a swim, you definitely have a stop at the swimming pool of Höfn. There are several hot tubs, slidings and saunas to enjoy.
Continue your drive to Stoksness. You’ll have to pay entrance to visit Stoksness in a charming café near Vestrahorn camping, where you can enjoy a coffee and some pie if you’d like. A gravel road will take you to different parking lots. Make sure to bring a visit to the Viking village, a replica of an authentic Viking village. Continue on the gravel road and enjoy the fantastic scenery of Stoksness, with Vestrahorn in the background.

Vikingcafe
This accommodation is at the entrance to visit Stoksness. Every unit has a private bathroom and you can enjoy a buffet or a continental breakfast.
Dynjandi Guesthouse
This bed and breakfast on a farm offers basic rooms with mountain views. Each room has a private bathroom in the hallway. You can see the famous Vestrahorn from this accommodation.
Sauðanes Guesthouse
This accommodation offers rooms with shared bathrooms. Some rooms have sea views. There is a shared kitchen and a terrace to enjoy the sun. The location of this guesthouse is stunning!
Day 6 – At the very east of Iceland

Description
This day will take you to the most eastern point of Iceland. There isn’t that much to do as in the Southern part of the island, but the landscapes are marvelous. You have two options for your route:
- Either you continue driving on the Ring Road until you reach Egilsstaðir. On this road, you’ll follow the coastline.
- Another option is to take road 939 and road 95 to reach Egilsstaðir. This road will take you through inland Iceland. Expect the road to be a bit more rough than the Ring Road, but it has some nice stops along the way. This road can be done with a 2WD vehicle.
From Egilsstaðir, continue driving on Road 1 until you reach Studlagil canyon. Make sure that if you drive to Studlagil, you stay on the east bank. The west bank is much easier to reach, but the view is disappointing. If you visit this canyon via the east bank and are driving a 2WD you’ll have to park at Studlagil east side parking. From here it’s a 2 hour return walk to the viewpoint. If you are driving a 4WD it’s possible to continue driving until Parkplatz Klastrusel. From here it’s a one hour return walk to the viewpoint.

This accommodation provides rooms with mountain views and a children’s playground. All rooms include a desk and bathrooms are private or shared. A buffet breakfast is served every morning at the property. The café downstairs has a very cosy interior and it’s the perfect place to have a break.
Day 7 – Waterfalls and geothermal activity

Description
When driving in the direction of Myvatn, you’ll reach the parking lots of Dettifoss, Selfoss and Hafragilfoss. It’s best to visit Dettifoss and Selfoss from the west bank. From the large parking lot it’s a 1 kilometer hike to the upper viewpoint of Dettifoss. We also recommend to have a look at Dettifoss from the lower viewpoint, where you can truly admire its power. From the same parking lot, you can reach Selfoss and Hafragilfoss.
Continue the drive to Myvatn. Near the lake of Myvatn you have several fun things to do. We enjoyed visiting Krafla, a volcano with a beautiful blue lake inside. On the way to Krafla, you can have a hot shower at the geothermal infinity shower.
Another cool spot to visit is the Myvatn geothermal area, with steaming rock formations, boiling mud pools and the smell of rotten eggs.
Other interesting things to do along lake Myvatn are Hverfjall volcano, the lava field Dimmuborgir and Skútustaðagígar, with its pseudo craters.
Where to stay in Myvatn
Fosshótel Mývatn
This luxury hotel is located right next to the lake. There is a bar and restaurant with a splendid view over the lake. The spacious rooms all have a private bathroom and some offer a view over the lake. A delicious breakfast is included.
Eldá Guesthouse
This guesthouse is located a few minutes on foot from the lake. All the rooms have a work desk, a wash basin and free WiFi. The bathroom facilities are shared. There is a shared garden, dining room and kitchen.
Sel – Hótel Mývatn
All rooms have a private bathroom, tea and coffee making facilities and a work desk. A buffet breakfast is served each morning.
Day 8 – Whale watching

Iceland is also the perfect spot to go whale watching. There are different places in Iceland where you can book a whale watching tour. We suggest to book a tour in Husavik, where you have different companies to choose from. Before boarding, you’ll be able to bring a visit to the quaint town Husavik with its harbor and little restaurants.

Fosshotel Husavik
This beautiful and modern hotel is situated in the heart of Husavik, but offers free parking. All luxury rooms have a seating area and a private bathroom with shower. An excellent breakfast is included.
Day 9 – From the North to the Westfjords
Description
On day 9 you’ll continue driving to the most remote parts of Iceland, the Westfjords. The drive takes some time but the landscapes are worth it. One particular thing to check out when driving in Northern Iceland is Godafoss, one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls. The waterfall itself is 30 meters wide, but is divided into several smaller waterfalls by rocks.

This hotel is close to one of Iceland’s best salmon rivers and a natural hot spring. There is a restaurant in the hotel. All rooms have private bathrooms and a desk. A very good breakfast is included. Some rooms have magnificent views.

Day 10 and day 11 – Westfjords

Description
It is said that only 10% of the Icelandic visitors make it to the Westfjords. But that doesn’t mean there is nothing to see. Because there aren’t as many tourists than in other parts of Iceland, the Westfjords are the best place to enjoy the Icelandic nature and landscapes in full peace.
Coming from Husavik, you’ll enter the Westfjords via road 68. We suggest you make a loop and leave the Westfjords again via road 60. By doing so, you’ll see all the important sights of the Westfjords. Below, we give an overview of the stops you should definitely include in your trip:
- Pottarnir á Drangsnesi – Situated on road 645. These hot pools have a wonderful view over the fjords.
- Hörgshlíðarlaug – Situated not far from road 633. A quite basic hot pool but in a stunning location.
- Ósvör Maritime Museum – An outside museum/reproduction of an old fishing village.
- Dynjandi waterfall: the most famous waterfall of the Westfjords. This waterfall, 100 meters tall and 60 meters wide, comes down the mountain in different stages. Standing next to it is so impressive!
- Reykjafjarðarlaug hot pool – Hot pools next to the road.
- Abandoned Barn Fossfjörður – This abandoned shed is the perfect Instagram hotspot. The weathered wood of the shed and the landscape in the background makes this the hottest abandoned place in Iceland
- Garðar BA 64 – Old steel ship that has been beached. Impressive to see how big this ship was.
- Látrabjarg – Amazing views and nice hike. If you’re there in the right season you have a big chance to spot puffins.
- Rauðisandur Beach – One of the few sand beaches in Iceland that is not black.
Where to stay in the Westfjords (day 10)
Sudavik guesthouse

This guesthouse is situated on a wonderful location in Súdavik with splendid views over the sea and mountains.

If you’re looking to stay in an authentic Icelandic home, this guesthouse is a perfect fit. This guesthouse with its wonderful and cosy atmosphere is situated in Flateyri. It has a garden, free WiFi, a shared kitchen and a shared lounge. The views over de sea and mountains are marvelous. A continental breakfast is included at this bed and breakfast.

Reykhólar hostel
This hostel provides accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking. As a bonus you have access to the sauna, hot tub and a hot spring bath. There is a shared kitchen and lounge. The bathroom facilities are shared as well.

This accommodation offers rooms with sea and/or mountain views and all have private bathrooms. There is a shared lounge and a restaurant. All rooms come with a desk, a flat-screen TV and a kettle. It’s the perfect place to end your days in the Westfjords.

The Snæfellsnes peninsula is known as ‘little Iceland’ because all natural wonders of Iceland can also be found on this peninsula. Below, we give you an overview of the main attractions on this peninsula
- Búðakirkja – the most famous church in Iceland. Búðakirkja is a small wooden black church from 1703, situated on the south side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula.
- Arnarstapi – Here you have one of the more popular hikes on the peninsula, the Hellnar hike. The hike is about 2,5 kilometers long and takes about 45 minutes (one-way). It’s a cliff walk with a stunning scenery.
- Svörtuloft Lighthouse – Not easy to reach, but the orange lighthouse together with the surroundings make the trip worth it.
- Kirkjufell(sfoss) – The most famous mountain in Iceland. This mountain, together with the waterfall in front, is one of the most popular photos taken of Iceland.
- Saxholar Crater – A 109 meters crater gives some impressive views over the area and the hike to the top doesn’t take long. So definitely worth a stop when passing by.
Where to stay around Kirkjufellsfoss
The accommodations below are all situated close to Kirkjufell, the famous mountain Iceland is known for.

Day 14 – Reykjavik
Description
Your final stop is Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. One of the most popular attractions in Reykjavik is Hallgrímskirkja, the famous church with its specific architecture. There is a range of interesting musea to enjoy in Reykjavik (like the maritime museum, the saga museum, …). We recommend paying a visit to ‘the sun voyager’, an abstract sculpture of a ship. The main street is the perfect place for some souvenir shopping.
Tip – If you’re heading to the harbor, we recommend to stop at ‘the sea baron’ to taste the best lobster soup you’ve ever tasted!

A swimsuit and quick dry towel – There are so many natural hot springs and excellent swimming pools in Iceland, so it would be a pity if you couldn’t take advantage of this. So don’t forget your swimsuit and a quick dry towel. Slippers are a good idea for the walk from your car to the hot pool and back.
Rain gear – The weather in Iceland can change rapidly, so take rain gear with you so you’ll be able to go outside even if it’s raining. And to visit the many waterfalls, a rain jacket and rain pants help you to stay warm and dry.
